Now Assist for Creators | Building Smarter Not Harder

By: Antonio G.

Now Assist is ServiceNow’s new AI layer and it arms creators with more tools than a Swiss Army Knife. These tools are embedded throughout the platform in every nook and cranny to aid admins, citizen developers, and developers, located in areas we are already familiar with like Script Editor, Flow Designer, and App Engine Studio. Now Assist is organized into three core components: Skills, Agentic Workflows, and the Now Assist Admin Console.

  • Skills are AI capabilities that perform a single task like generating a flow or summarizing a script. Each skill operates in a clearly defined scope and executes a single unit of reusable work.

  • Agentic Workflows combine multiple skills in sequence to complete end-to-end automation. Rather than performing a single task, they orchestrate agents like building blocks. This isn’t simply a place to house multiple skills in tandem. It is far more robust than that, with each agent carrying tools that can call flow actions, run record operations, execute scripts, trigger subflows, and invoke published Now Assist Skills. Agentic Workflows are also dynamic not static, reasoning through each returned step to decide what comes next.

  • The Now Assist Admin Console is the central hub where admins install, configure, activate, and monitor everything Now Assist across the instance.

As of the Zurich Patch 4 release, all designated skills are active and ready to go upon plugin installation, which cuts down the setup work considerably. What is available to you depends on more than just the install. The subscription tier and entitlements determine which skills you can access. Therefore, validating what licenses your instance has is key for planning around specific skills. This enables creators with AI capabilities that increase their solution delivery potential, but with great power comes great responsibility. Imagine a world where developers, admins, and citizen developers could write code, generate workflows, and automate processes using plain language. This is all hands-on deck allowing everyone to contribute in meaningful ways.

However, it is important to point out this is not a simple click a button and do the work for me tool. It is more so a resource and accelerator that gives you a starting point, reduces repetitive tasks, closes knowledge gaps, and adds transparency. This allows creators to focus on more significant work and improved service delivery. According to ServiceNow’s own internal Now on Now deployment, there is a 48% code generation acceptance rate alongside a 10% boost in developer productivity per week. Fewer than half of the suggestions were taken as-is, while still giving time back to developers. The value is in the starting point not simply blind acceptance. This means the human element and expertise still drives the final decision. Creators stay in the driver’s seat using their platform and project knowledge to review, refine, deliver, and ultimately innovate. The misconception that tools like Now Assist will replace talent is simply not true. If anything, it amplifies it!

Beyond the Script Editor: Value for the Whole Team

Let’s zoom out and look beyond the scripting capabilities. The focus here is on the value to the team and not just the individual. Now Assist has some hidden gems that often get overlooked.

Flow Generation with Images

When building out requirements, how often are they misunderstood and delivered differently than what was intended? How much time gets wasted going back and forth trying to get everyone on the same page? Imagine taking a whiteboard session, flow chart, or Visio diagram and simply uploading a photo. Now Assist generates a flow draft of those requirements to give you a well-informed starting point. The conversation shifts from describing what needs to be built to refining what was already generated straight from the source. The result is fewer miscommunications, faster alignment, and less time lost in translation.

Spoke Generation

When everyone is looking at the same data and systems are connected, things operate much more smoothly. Leveraging Integration Hub, the Spoke Generation skill allows teams to connect ServiceNow to external systems in a simpler and more accessible way. This removes the bottlenecks and barriers that have historically made integration work a specialist task. Instead, it unlocks system-to-system automation that extends the reach and value of the platform well beyond its walls. That said, generated spokes are not completed integrations. Authentication, pagination and error handling all require review and testing are necessary prior to implementation.

Process Inefficiency Highlights

There is a saying that “A one-degree change in direction can lead to a completely different destination.” Let that sink in while wearing your ServiceNow thinking cap. Teams can receive feedback sooner and take corrective action before small misalignments become big problems. This is a massive insight that helps reduce technical debt and gets teams on the right foot as they move forward. Catching a poor design early is always cheaper than discovering it in production. For example, a CI identification rule that generates duplicates during each Discovery job muddies the CMDB, affecting every change, incident, dependency map and everything else in between. Requiring many avoidable hours of analysis, planning and data cleanup.

ATF Test Case Generation

So, you want me to develop, test, write test cases, and maintain them all in this economy? This added effort turns what should be standard practice into an additional mountain to climb that teams often avoid. There is simply too much to do and too many deadlines to meet. When test cases are generated automatically the excuses go out the door. Testing becomes a natural part of the deployment, upgrade, and clone-down processes rather than something that gets skipped when time runs out. This provides better coverage and confidence in what is being delivered while reducing the number of incidents and problems teams have to handle after the fact.

Documentation Generation

Documentation is a necessary evil for development teams. Evil in the sense that it takes time away from actual development. However, it is necessary because teams need answers to questions like who built this, how does it work, and where does it live. Without adequate documentation, knowledge gets siloed and walks out the door with the people who built it. On top of that, once it is written it requires ongoing maintenance, or it quickly becomes outdated with each release. Now Assist changes this dynamic by making documentation a natural byproduct of building rather than a separate task that always gets pushed to the bottom of the list. It’s important to note that each generated document is essentially a draft, not a source of truth, requiring proper review and publication processes.

App, Flow and Script Summary

How much time does a team spend getting a new resource up to speed on an unfamiliar instance or project? The App, Flow, and Script Summary capabilities are essentially on-demand knowledge, providing self-serve context for whatever is in front of you. Need to understand what an application does? Generate an App Summary. Need to understand how a flow works step by step? Generate a Flow Summary. Need to understand what a script is doing without reading every line? Generate a Script Summary. This not only provides big picture perspective, but it also frees up experienced resources from being shadowed and leaned on. By generating a full summary, creators can also identify upstream and downstream impacts of the items they touch. This makes every decision more informed and every change less risky. This significantly accelerates the onboarding process for new developers and architects, who can build working knowledge on their own in a fraction of the time.

Closing

Now Assist for Creator is a tool that unlocks a team’s true potential by not bogging them down with the mundane and getting them answers when they need them. It is not just a productivity boost. It provides a level of transparency that is unparalleled. Knowledge that once lived in one person’s head is now accessible to the whole team. Processes that were once unclear are now documented. Problems that would have surfaced in production get caught early. New resources that would have taken weeks or even months to onboard can start contributing in days.

Beyond the highlighted features, which are just the tip of the iceberg, Now Assist for Creators also includes Code Assist for writing, editing, and refactoring scripts, App Generation for scaffolding entire applications, Catalog Item and Mobile Card Generation, Playbook Generation with Images, RPA Bot Generation, Event Handler Generation, Work Notes Analysis, and the Now Assist Skill Kit which allows teams to build their own custom skills tailored to their specific business needs. The question is no longer whether AI belongs in ServiceNow development. The question is how much value your team is leaving on the table by not using it.

Ultimately, it’s important to highlight that a race car is only as good as its driver, and without the right choices at the wheel you won’t make it across the finish line efficiently. You can have all these fancy tools at your fingertips, but without proper oversight and governance, none of it adds value. Every generated output needs to be treated as a raw material and not a deliverable, still moving through review, testing, refinement and validation before it ever reaches production. Every one of these checkpoints can only be done by experienced developers who can take these tools and make the proper judgment calls. When done right the results are measurable in ways like shorter delivery cycles, less rework, and fewer defects.
